Talking Design

As a guest lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), our Design Director, Geoff Courtman, recently delivered a talk on the design fundamentals of layout and typography. Students got a thorough overview of the thinking and aesthetic principles that go into Geoff’s work, all of which are key considerations when creating any piece of communication design.

The talk covered topics from structure and hierarchy, to space, scale, and tension, to rhythm and flow (no, not Geoff’s dance moves, but the movement of one piece of visual information to the next).

While it’s not unusual for designers to give talks on their creative projects, UTS were particularly impressed by the structure of the presentation and how the work was broken down into key considerations, thus making it more of a useful learning experience for the students.
